Manchester United midfielder Fred has this afternoon revealed his opinion that the club’s hard-fought draw with Liverpool last weekend can act as a springboard for the rest of their season.
United 1-1 Liverpool
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men welcomed their fierce rivals to Old Trafford last Sunday, for a high-profile Premier League showdown.
The two sides headed into proceedings on markedly-differing recent runs of form, though.
Hosts United had notched just 1 win from their last 5 outings across all competitions. This left the Red Devils sitting 14th in the English top-flight ahead of kick-off, hovering precariously above the relegation zone.
Liverpool, on the other hand, were flying high atop the Premier League table, having picked up a perfect 8 wins from 8.
As such, ahead of things getting underway at Old Trafford, the visitors were understandably viewed as heavy favourites.
When all was said and done, however, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United held their own, to eventually emerge with a point.
Marcus Rashford opened the scoring late in the first-half, before Adam Lallana notched a crucial equaliser for Liverpool 5 minutes from time.
‘What we needed’
United’s performance versus the in-form European champions proved, in the eyes of many, their finest of the campaign thus far.
And one individual who feels as though their display last Sunday can therefore prove a building block to get the Red Devils’ season back on track is midfielder Fred.
Speaking in an interview with Manchester United’s official website earlier today, the Brazilian revealed that the 90 minutes versus Liverpool provided a ‘lift’ to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad, before also discussing his hopes of securing a consistent run of appearances in the club’s midfield moving forward:
‘We feel great. It was a really good game for us.’
‘We’re unhappy with having conceded the goal but in general we were very happy with the performance. Now we need to focus to consistently produce this type of performance and get back to winning ways.’
‘The game really lifted us again and it was what we needed. Tactically we got things right and we really need to make the most of that – it was an absolutely incredible intensity we played with.’
‘I’m really happy to have had a run in the team.’
‘I’m not so happy about the way we’ve been playing at times but the game against Liverpool feels like a real turning point and I hope I can have a run of form and the team can have a run of form, play great games and get the victories. That’s what we’re all working towards to move us out of the position we’re in at the moment.’
