The future of Reds’ defender Lovren has been the subject of intense speculation of late.

On the back of a difficult campaign last time out, during which the Croatian managed just 11 Premier League starts, reports have been rife that Liverpool would be open to allowing Lovren to move on before the close of the European transfer window at the beginning of next month.

All of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip currently sit ahead of the 30-year-old in the defensive pecking order at Anfield, with Jurgen Klopp said to have full faith in the talents of teenage prodigy Ki-Jana Hoever:

To this point, meanwhile, the outfit most persistently-touted as a potential destination for Lovren have been AS Roma.

The Serie A giants are known to be on the lookout for reinforcements at centre-half, with Giallorossi boss Paulo Fonseca said to be an admirer of the out-of-favour Liverpool man.

As such, a deal to send Lovren to the Stadio Olimpico had been widely-expected to come to fruition over the coming weeks.

However, as per the latest update courtesy of Melissa Reddy of ESPN, negotiations appear to have fallen through.

This comes after Roma attempted to change the terms of the deal to a loan, rather than an outright purchase:
