Argentina 1 – Paraguay 1
Two matches played, and Argentina are yet to win a game at the 2019 Copa America.
Argentina opened their Copa America campaign losing 2-0 to Colombia.
Second half goals from Roger Martinez and Duvan Zapata sunk the Argentines.
On Wednesday night in Brazil, Argentina could only draw 1-1 with Paraguay.
Once again Argentina conceded first as Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron set up Richard Sanchez to break the deadlock.
Leo Messi scored his first goal at the competition from the penalty spot to level the contest in the 57th minute.
Leo Messi, Argentina & staying in the 2019 Copa America
Forgot about winning the 2019 Copa America for now.
Will Argentina even qualify out of their group?
Argentina close out their group phase with a match against World Cup 2022 hosts Qatar.
Heading into the game, Qatar are third in their group (1 point, -1 goal difference) while Argentina are bottom (1 point, -2 goal difference).
Paraguay, meanwhile, are second with two points, while Colombia have already booked their spot in the next round with two wins.
If Argentina beat Qatar…
Even if the Albiceleste beat Qatar, as expected, Argentina’s qualification for the next stage is now out of their hands.
However, to be dumped out the competition, Brazil would need to draw with Peru, Venezuela would need to beat Bolivia and three teams in Group C (out of Uruguay, Chile, Ecuador and Japan) would need to finish on three points.
To be clear, the top two in each group qualify for the quarter-finals. While the two best third-placed finishers will also advance into the next round.
If Argentina draw with Qatar…
Argentina would only qualify if Paraguay were to lose by more than two goals to Colombia plus no team in Group C finishes on three points.
If Argentina lose to Qatar…
Then Leo Messi and Argentina will go home.
