Chelsea need a new manager
Chelsea and Juventus confirmed the news on Sunday.
After a protracted period of talks, Maurizio Sarri finally left Chelsea to become the Juventus manager
Sarri only spent one season at Stamford Bridge. However, that season proved rather successful.
Sarri’s final match with the Blues was the Europa League final win over Arsenal. That handed Sarri his first major trophy in management.
Moreover, Sarri’s Chelsea finished in third place in the Premier League.
Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo vs Frank Lampard
The front-runner to succeed Sarri in the Chelsea dugout is current Derby County boss Frank Lampard.
Lampard, of course, is a Chelsea legend and the club’s all-time record goalscorer.
But should Chelsea appoint Lampard after just one season in management with the Rams?
In the Times on Monday, Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo is named as an alternative to Lampard:
Other candidates include Nuno EspÃrito Santo, the Wolverhampton Wanderers manager, and Ralf Rangnick, of RB Leipzig, but Lampard is now the strong favourite for the role.
Where did this ‘Nuno Espirito Santo to Chelsea’ rumour come from?
The Times actually first linked the Wolves boss to Chelsea last week.
However, the Times have yet to outline a convincing case to suggest that Chelsea could indeed land the Wolves boss.
It should also be noted that the Daily Express spouted the Nuno-Chelsea story almost a week ago. The tabloid claimed the Wolves boss was one of six names being considered by Chelsea:
Former Stamford Bridge hero Frank Lampard, ex Juventus coach Max Allegri, England no2 Steve Holland, Ajax’s Erik ten Hag, Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo and Watford coach Javi Gracia are all contenders for the job.
For the record, Nuno Espirito Santo is under contract at Wolves until 2021.
In two years at Molineux under Nuno Espirito Santo, Wolves have won Premier League promotion and then finished seventh in the top flight.
Wolves will compete in this year’s Europa League.
So will Frank Lampard get the Chelsea job?
Returning to the Times, it seems so. The paper claim:
Chelsea will accelerate plans to appoint Frank Lampard as their new manager.
Derby County will receive compensation is Lampard leaves for Chelsea.
The Times today suggest Chelsea could pay Derby 4 million pounds for their manager.
