Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino wins Champions League award

Liverpool star Roberto Firmino has this afternoon been named the Champions League Player of the Week.

Liverpool 2-0 Porto

Jurgen Klopp’s men welcomed Portuguese giants Porto to Anfield on Tuesday night, for the first-leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

Liverpool headed into proceedings in fine form, with the Merseysiders having followed their 3-1 defeat of Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in the Champions League’s last-16 last month with a trio of domestic wins over the weeks since.

The latest of these came last Friday, when the Reds put Southampton to the sword at St. Mary’s to reclaim their place atop the Premier League table.

And, when the 90 minutes at Anfield were said and done on Tuesday, Liverpool’s stellar form continued.

A superb first-half showing on the part of the hosts saw Naby Keita open the game’s scoring with just 5 minutes on the clock, as the Guinean’s deflected effort from the edge of the box found the far corner of Iker Casillas’ goal.

And Roberto Firmino went on to double Liverpool’s advantage 20 minutes later.

The Brazilian rounded out the night’s scoring from close-range, following some superb work down the right between Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold:

Firmino rewarded

And, as has since been announced, Firmino, who, along with notching his side’s crucial 2nd, picked up the assist for Liverpool’s opener on Tuesday, has today been rewarded for his display by UEFA.

The former Hoffenheim man has been named the Champions League Player of the Week, ahead of Heung-min Son, Frenkie de Jong and Gerard Pique:
