Newcastle’s supporters have flooded to Twitter this evening to lavish praise on January signing Miguel Almiron, following the Paraguayan’s impressive home debut versus Huddersfield.
Newcastle vs Huddersfield
Rafael Benitez’s men welcomed Premier League basement-dwellers Huddersfield to St. James’ Park a short time ago.
The Mapgies headed into the clash hoping to take advantage of both Cardiff and Fulham falling to defeats last night by moving further clear of the Premier League relegation zone.
Huddersfield, on the other hand, sat rock-bottom of the English top-flight ahead of kick-off this afternoon, a full 14 points adrift of safety.
Newcastle dominate
As such, it came as little surprise when the hosts made short work of Jan Siewert’s men over the ensuing 90 minutes on Tyneside.
After a first-half during which Huddersfield somehow managed to keep their clean sheet intact despite Tommy Smith’s red card and an absolute rake of clear-cut chances for Newcastle, the Magpies finally opened the game’s scoring shortly after the interval, when Salomon Rondon slammed home from close-range.
46 – Salomón Rondón has been directly involved in 46% of Newcastle’s 24 Premier League goals this season (7 goals, 4 assists). Spearhead.

And Ayoze Perez went on to add a 2nd for the home side just 5 minutes later, finishing off a superb flowing move.
In truth, when all was said and done at St. James’, Huddersfield were lucky to escape having only conceded 2 goals, with Newcastle having struck the woodwork 4 times, and frankly-dominated from start to finish.
Almiron shines
In the aftermath of a superb outing from Rafael Benitez’s men, a number of Newcastle’s stars have been singled out for special praise by the club’s fans.
The likes of Sean Longstaff, Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez all impressed, but it was one player in particular who had the Magpies’ faithful on the edge of their seats throughout proceedings this afternoon.
The individual in question was Miguel Almiron, who was appearing in his home debut for Newcastle following his club-record January arrival from MLS outfit Atlanta United.
And to say that the Paraguayan went on to impress would be an understatement.
Almiron was absolutely everywhere at St. James’ this afternoon, linking up play between the home side’s midfield and attack, bursting up and down the left-wing with seering pace and pinpoint crossing, and, crucially, putting in an absolute shift to showcase his grit and determination.
‘The real deal’
As such, Newcastle’s supporters have unsurprisingly not been shy about voicing their opinions on their side’s new star man in the time since the clash, with some of the social media highlights below:
Almiron has made such a difference to Newcastle; quick, quick-witted, a threat, a link between Rondon and the rest. Nice to see some creativity alongside all the honesty and hard work. Promising! (This will be the kiss of the death, sorry).

Hatem Ben Arfa didn’t have the best attitude but you’ll struggle to find many Newcastle fans that didn’t love him.
Miguel Almiron looks like he has just as much talent but an incredible temperament to match. This boy is going to be LOVED on Tyneside #NUFC— Aaron Stokes (@AaronJStokes) February 23, 2019
