Supporters of Barcelona have taken to Twitter in numbers this evening to react to the news that Lionel Messi will not start in their Clasico showdown with Real Madrid.
Barcelona vs Real Madrid
Spanish football’s two biggest sides are set to reignite their rivalry once more tonight, in the first-leg of their Copa Del Rey semi-final tie.
The clash actually comes as the first of 3 meetings set to take place between the Blaugrana and Los Blancos over the next month.
After going head-to-head in the 2nd-leg of their Copa tie on the 27th, Barca will then travel to the Bernabeu for a La Liga matchup on the 2nd of March.
Messi concern
Ahead of kick-off at the Camp Nou, one of the main talking points surrounding tonight’s Clasico had been whether or not Lionel Messi would be fit to start.
The Argentine hitman picked up a problem during Barcelona’s 2-2 stalemate with Valencia at the weekend, after dragging his side back into proceedings with a brace.

And, though Messi managed to see out the 90 minutes in Catalunya, Ernesto Valverde went on to confirm in the game’s aftermath that his side’s talisman had suffered a thigh injury, and would require further tests:
Valverde: Messi has a small [thigh] problem but we still don’t know [what it is exactly]. There will be tests tomorrow to find out.

Messi out, Malcom in
As such, Messi was immediately viewed as a doubt to feature in tonight’s El Clasico.
And, in a blow for the La Liga champions, the announcement of Barca’s starting XI a short time ago has since seen the 31-year-old omitted:

As such, fans of the Catalan giants have unsurprisingly flooded to social media to react to the news regarding their star man, with the majority, understandably, having been left hugely-disappointed:

Others, meanwhile, took news of Messi’s absence in a more positive light, with many excited by the prospect of Malcom being handed the chance to shine on the grandest stage of them all:
